Therapudic and Elective
Induced abortions can be classified as either Therapeutic or
Elective. In a therapudic abortion, the procedure is performed in precaution of the mother's
health or to even save her life. A therapudic abortion may also be seen as necessary if the baby is in a fatal condition
or in order to reduce the number of fetuses in the mother's womb, thus decreasing the babys' health risks.
Medication Abortion
A medication abortion can only be done within the first eight weeks of pregnancy and
occurrs in three steps. You will either be given a dose of Mifepristone or Methotrexate. Mifepristone breaks down
the lining of the uterus, which ends the pregnancy, and Methotrexate stops the baby's growth. Next, the doctor
will perscribe Misoprostal. It can be taken at home or in the clinic. Usually, you will take it for three to five
days, depending on if you have taken Mifepristone of Methotrexate. Within either hours or days, you will begin to bleed
heavily. This is the tissue coming out of you. Within two weeks, you will need to schedule a follow-up appointement,
so the doctor can make sure everything went smoothely.
What will it cost?
A medication abortion averages
at about five hundred dollars. If you receive a Vacuum Aspiration, it will average at just above five-hundred dollars. Going
to a hospital will probably cost you more. Your insurance plan may cover your abortion.

What will I experience?
First, you will need to fill out some paperwork and recieve a physical exam.
You will also be educated on the procedure. The doctor will examine your uterus before inserting a speculum into
your vagina. After this, you may be sedated or your cervix may be numbed. Your cervix will either be
dialated by special absorbent dilators or the doctors will dialate the cervix the previous evening, allowing the it
to dialate during the night. Medication may also be used in addition or as a replacement. The doctor will
insert a tube into the cervix, and the uterus will be emtied either by a hand held suction device or by a suction machine.
Afterward, you will need a recovery time of approximately one hour. A follow up appointment will be scheduled for an
ultra sound and a blood test.
A completely different type of abortion is known as a Spontaneaous Abortion. In this
situation, which occurrs in 15-40% of all pregnancies, the baby stops forming, ending the pregnancy. This can also be
called a miscarriage.
THE RISKS:

- Half of women who have had an abortion suffer at least one of numerous psychological problems.
- 5% contract PID (Pelvix Inflammatory Disease) wich can lead to a fever or even infertility.
